    Graz is the capital of Steiermark and the second largest city in Austria (240.000 inhabitants). Graz lies at the Mura river banks in the southeast of the country. Modern life and historical architecture are well combined in the city in a fine mixture of the past and the present.

    The name of the city derives from the Slavic word "gradec" that means "a small fortress". A small castle was constructed on the hill which is nowadays called Shlossberg. For the first time the city is mentioned in documents at the beginning of the 12th century. Graz was in the power of many governors, including princes from Germany, Bohemia, Hungary, dynasties of Babenberg and Habsburger.

    The medieval city developed at the foot of the mountain Shlossberg that is why some constructions come up from the gothic period to our times. These buildings were constructed when Emperor Frederick III used Graz as the capital after the Hungarians expelled him from Vienna. The Schlossberg Castle and Domkirche Church together with the city tile roofs and Arcadian yards give Graz some special charm. In 1999 the center of the Old city of Graz was declared a piece of the world cultural heritage by UNESCO.
